Erica says~ I recommend the Angus cheeseburger at the Slanted Porch. It is the kind of food where you know you are full but you can't stop eating!! I order it as it comes and as it's cooked (which is very medium for those who like well so make sure to tell them how you want it). As for me, I like it medium and it is always perfect if Steve Hernandez the owner/chef is working. How to tell if Steve is in the kitchen? Look for a spirited man wearing MC Hammer chef pants with Crocks. Really, that's him.
The burger comes with fresh french fries, which we were told by staff today will start to come from small farms in this valley next week!! Numerous local farms supply SP with its produce needs. The meat? Well that comes from Steve's family ranch. It is excellent. The beef tastes like beef. Staff told us today they grind the burger right in house. Cool! It is juicy and flavorful. Be warned the burger is huge (you'll leave with tight pants for the rest of the afternoon) and it drips with an arm licking good mixture of sauce and juice. A Thousand Island type dressing, thinly shaved pickle, lettuce and red onion top this masterpiece. I would vote Fallon's best Burger for sure!!
They also have a "thumbs up" PB&J for the little guys that comes with a perfectly proportioned brownie. Combine with a root beer and it is also a slam dunk!
Rachel says~ It's the juice dripping all down your wrists that's the very best part of this burger and embarrassingly, they never bring you enough napkins. You would not want to eat this burger on a first date. This burger you eat with someone who knows all your faults and foibles and doesn't care that you ignore them once you bite into the cheese and sauce and greasy perfect hand shaped patty. This burger you eat to celebrate or commiserate.
Be careful if you're wimpy about raw meat because today a good vet could have brought Erica's burger back to life. But do not fret if you prefer your meat cooked well done, mine has to be practically dead but somehow Steve still manages to keep the burger tender and juicy.
Other things I like about SP...those fries are fabulous. Usually little wimpy, skinny cut fries don't do it for me, but there is something about the way these get all hot and soft and salty. You don't even need ranch dressing with them. Sitting at the bar for lunch is preferable to the dining room. The actual bar is a big slab of concrete, finished with a smooth glaze and it stays cool to the touch on a hot summer day. LaJeana, the effervescent waitress who some of you may remember from Aniceta's will make sure you have everything you need and make sure you feel like the most important customer in the place. And the brownies--just a perfect little nibble size, not too sweet, heavy and thick, that absolutely satisfies the "I need something sweet" to balance the salt/grease/meat fest of the burger you just ate.
Steve and Peggy also have Buckbean on tap, a quite palatable little ale from a brewery in Reno. If you haven't tried it yet, put any reservations aside and go with the original. Until next time...enjoy!
